What are Adaptive Equipment Kits?
Adaptive Equipment Kits are kits that can be checked out from any Perry County District Library location using a library card. These kits contain tools that can benefit those with loss of hand and grip strength and/or lack of fine motor skills.
Why Does the Library Offer These Kits?
When searching online for adaptive equipment and tools, the number of options can be overwhelming for some and many of these items can be expensive and may not always fit the needs of the user. Perry County District Library realizes these are two hurdles those in need may face and these Adaptive Equipment Kits are one way we are trying to bridge that gap.
By checking out an Adaptive Equipment Kit from one of our libraries, patrons have the unique opportunity to “try before they buy.” Not only does this give the user a chance to try a variety of tools at once, but it also gives them the ability to determine if the tools loaned to them by the library would be worth the personal investment. These kits may also introduce users to new tools they had yet to discover.
What is in the Adaptive Equipment Kit?
Each Adaptive Equipment Kit contains the following items (colors may vary):
- 1 Pen/Pencil Grip Trainer/Handwriting Aid
- Works for both left-handed and right-handed users
- Aims to help users learn how to hold a pencil properly, support hand health and reduce hand fatigue
- Universal fit for standard pens and pencils
- 2 Pen/Pencil Egg Shaped Ergonomic Handwriting Aids
- Works for both left-handed and right-handed users
- Firm, but comfortable cushion grip
- Helps relieve callouses, sores, discomfort; helps improve grip strength, stability, and control by creating a larger grip for enhanced stability
- Universal fit for standard pens and pencils
- 2 Guided Reading Highlight Strips – Single Line and Paragraph sizes
- Helps reduce visual stress, strengthens visual tracking skills, and helps with focus and concentration while reading
- Can be used on any type of print material
- Helps limit the transposing of letters and words for beginning readers, struggling readers, and those with Dyslexia
- Set of 4 Playing Card Holders
- Easy open and release function
- Designed to sit on a flat surface and be used hands-free or be held – large grip area will allow for enhanced stability while holding the playing cards
- Able to hold playing cards of all sizes

- Helps those with limited dexterity and those suffering from joint pain, arthritis, and carpal tunnel

What are Sensory & Calming Kits?
Sensory & Calming Kits are kits that can be checked out from any Perry County District Library location using a library card. These kits contain tools that can benefit those experiencing anxiety, restlessness, sensory overload, stress, etc. Each kit contains a variety of tools to encourage relaxation, ease anxiety, help with self-regulation, and keep restless hands busy.
Why Does the Library Offer These Kits?
When searching online for sensory and calming toys and tools, the number of options can be overwhelming for some and many of these items can be expensive and may not always fit the needs of the user. Perry County District Library realizes these are two hurdles those in need may face and these Sensory & Calming Kits are one way we are trying to bridge that gap.
By checking out a Sensory & Calming Kit from one of our libraries, patrons have the unique opportunity to “try before they buy.” These are also great resources for patrons who have neurodiverse visiting family, can assist with long car rides, and can also serve as a focus and attention aid for users of all ages. By allowing patrons to check out the kit from the library first, they will have the opportunity to try a variety of items to see how well these tools work for themselves or their children before making a personal investment.
What is in the Sensory & Calming Kit?
Each Sensory & Calming Kit contains the following items (colors may vary):
- 2 Fingertip Fidget Toys
- Great for relieving stress or calming restless, fidgety hands
- Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand or on your fingertip, can be used one-handed
- Two type of fidget styles: flippy chain and bike/roller chain
- 6 Calming Sticker Strips
- Rough, yet gentle texture
- Great for repeated scratching, picking, rubbing, and smoothing
- Works great for those in need of autistic stimuli, or those suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, anxiety, or high stress
- Great to help with concentration and focus
- 1 Calming Sensory Tube
- Great for self-soothing and self-regulation when in stressful situations or experiencing hard emotions
- Helps with anxiety and stress relief
- Helps when practicing quiet focus skills
- Can also serve as a fidget toy
- 6 Super Sensory Tension Bands
- All six bands are a different color, texture, and tension
- Provides stress relief and visual stimulation
- Soft and extremely stretchy, these bands are great for fidgety hands
- Different tensions and textures allow the user to focus on one sensation at a time, helping with concentration
- 1 Large Pop It Fidget Toy
- Offers 100 “bubbles” to repeatedly pop
- Soft silicone makes this a great toy for those with sensory processing disorders
- Great for stress relief, focus, and calming busy hands
- Quiet enough to be used in a variety of settings such as offices, schools, classrooms and libraries
