Stepping Stones: Adult Literacy Education

What is Stepping Stones?

The Stepping Stones: Adult Literacy Education program is an ongoing program designed to empower adult literacy students. The goal of the program is to increase awareness of adult illiteracy in Perry County, embolden people to better themselves through learning to read, and provide safe and well-trained volunteers to assist students in becoming readers while also empowering those we serve to reach personal goals while readying themselves for employment opportunities.

Who qualifies for the program?

This program is designed for adults (18+) in Perry County who want to better enhance their literacy skills.

How does the program work?

Individual students are paired with a volunteer tutor who will provide instruction in a one-on-one format. The first one-on-one session will be scheduled by a PCDL staff member at one of the six PCDL locations (Corning, Crooksville, Junction City, New Lexington, Somerset, and Thornville). After the initial session, all remaining sessions will be scheduled by the student and the tutor.

Each literacy student will receive their own workbook at the start of the program to be used during instruction. Instruction materials are designed to address both reading and spelling and are verified teaching materials. The program is designed to be completed at the individual's own pace, so it will be up to the tutor and student to determine how quickly to move through the material and how many sessions will be required.

Tutors value the privacy and time of the student. Because of this, students will never be asked to work in a group setting and tutors will work with the student and their schedule.
